Oil prices saw a significant increase on Monday due to grim news from the Persian Gulf. The price of Brent crude for October and November deliveries rose by more than 3% and surpassed $108 per barrel. Additionally, the American West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for October delivery also increased by over 3% to around $103. This price surge was triggered by the shutdown of the East-West pipeline in Saudi Arabia following drone attacks.

Shutdown of the East-West Pipeline

The East-West pipeline in Saudi Arabia transports crude oil from across the kingdom to Red Sea ports, allowing oil to reach export terminals without passing through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the shutdown of this pipeline at a time when the Strait of Hormuz is in its most dangerous state has eliminated the most important alternative route. This action by Saudi Arabia was taken in response to recent attacks on oil and commercial facilities in the region.

Insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz

On Sunday, Iranian officials announced that a commercial ship was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in one death and three injuries. Navigation through this waterway is now heavily affected by the security situation. Ships must obtain permission from Iran to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, and Tehran is considering a mechanism to charge for services. Vessels that defy this order are often targeted, and U.S. forces periodically bombard the Iranian coast.

Diplomatic efforts in this regard have also been put on hold. Oman has postponed scheduled talks between Iran and Gulf Arab countries regarding the future of this waterway, which accounts for a significant share of global oil transportation. This situation could have profound impacts on the global oil market and fuel prices in the United States.

Economic Consequences and Fuel Prices in America

A new record for fuel prices at American gas stations is clearly noticeable. The national average price of diesel in the U.S. surpassed $6 per gallon for the first time on Friday. This figure represents a significant increase from the previous week, which was around $5.85, and is nearly 60% higher than the $3.71 that drivers paid last year. Gasoline prices also reached an average of $4.22 after breaking records over the Labor Day weekend.

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump has pointed to diesel production facilities in Russia and called for an end to attacks on these facilities. He stated that these attacks exacerbate the diesel shortage in the global market. Analysts predict that disruptions caused by the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and the ban on diesel exports from Russia could have even deeper impacts on the global oil and fuel market.
