Venezuela will participate in the G20 Energy Summit in Houston, representing the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Petróleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA). The summit begins on Monday, and Venezuelan representatives will attend this event at the invitation of the U.S. government. This action indicates a closer relationship between Washington and Caracas.
Details of the Summit and Venezuela's Participation
Although Venezuela is not among the 20 largest economies in the world, its participation in the G20 negotiations is considered an important political move that provides Caracas with more opportunities for diplomatic and economic interactions. Officials from the country will have access to several bilateral meetings and side events during the summit.
Venezuela's presence at the G20 summit is seen as an opportunity to increase the country's oil production. U.S. President Donald Trump has urged oil companies to boost their production in Venezuela, especially following the ousting of Nicolás Maduro, the former leader of Venezuela, in January. The Trump administration has also supported further development of mineral resources under the interim leadership of Delcy Rodríguez.
Oil Agreements and Venezuela's Reserves
Trump recently announced a major oil agreement that allows the United States to acquire 35 percent of North American Blue Energy Partners' shares and also grants the right to purchase 20 percent of the oil production from these fields at cost. Venezuela's oil fields have proven reserves of 65 billion barrels, indicating the country's high potential in the oil industry.
At this summit, Paula Henao, Venezuela's Minister of Hydrocarbons, and Giovanni Martínez, Executive Vice President of PDVSA, will be present. The G20 summit, recognized as the energy capital of the world and hosting oil and mining companies, could provide more opportunities for reaching commercial agreements regarding Venezuelan oil.
The focus of this summit will be on energy security, abundance, and access to energy resources. All these topics align with Trump's goal of expanding oil and gas development and could have significant impacts on global oil markets.
