The Baltic Dry Freight Index reached its lowest level in nearly four weeks on Monday. This index, which monitors freight rates for large ships including capesize, panamax, and supramax vessels, decreased by 158 points, equivalent to 4.61%, to reach 3268 points. This is the lowest point since the beginning of September.
Severe Drop in Capesize Index
The capesize index fell by 433 points, equivalent to 7.49%, to reach 5351 points. The average daily income for capesize vessels, which typically carry cargoes weighing 150,000 tons including iron ore and coal, has decreased by $3930 to $45024. This drop in income is due to pressures from excessive global supply and increased inventories at Chinese ports, as well as reduced production from steel mills due to deeper losses.

Impacts on Panamax Market and Other Vessels
The panamax index also decreased by 5 points, equivalent to 0.21%, to reach 2402 points. The average daily income for panamax vessels, which typically carry cargoes weighing 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grains, has decreased by $42 to $21620. These changes in rates reflect the challenges present in the maritime transport market and their impacts on the global supply chain.
Dalian iron ore futures also reached their lowest level in five weeks. The pressure from excessive global supply and reduced demand due to decreased production in steel mills has significantly impacted prices. This situation could have significant implications for global markets and supply chains related to raw materials.
