BIMCO (the International Shipping and Maritime Trade Association) has updated the new standard for electronic bills of lading (eBL) in the cargo transport sector. This action is aimed at facilitating the transition from paper documentation to digital documentation and is part of broader efforts to digitize global trade.
Details of the eBL Standard
The updated eBL standard includes a structured data set that comprises 36 predefined data fields. These fields are specifically designed for bulk shipping bills of lading and aim to create a common standard in the industry. Establishing such a standard allows BIMCO to support interoperability between systems and facilitate the adoption of electronic bills of lading.

BIMCO's Role in Digitizing Trade
BIMCO, as a founding member of the Future International Trade (FIT) coalition, continuously collaborates with the industry to assist in the digitization of global trade. These efforts aim to reduce costs, increase efficiency, and improve speed in international business processes. Given the increasing volume of global trade, the adoption of electronic bills of lading can play a significant role in facilitating this process.
By updating the eBL standard, BIMCO demonstrates its commitment to innovation in the shipping and maritime trade industry. This action not only helps reduce reliance on paper but also facilitates business processes and improves transparency. Ultimately, this could benefit all stakeholders in the supply chain.
