The trial of the private 5G network at Klaipėda port in Lithuania has successfully concluded, representing a significant transformation in the digitalization of port operations. Santa Monica Networks and the Latvian telecommunications provider, LMT, have completed the comprehensive design phase of a private network at the port and demonstrated practical applications of this technology to port managers.
The necessity of stable connectivity for port operations
Mindaugas Žiūkas, the director of Santa Monica Networks, stated that with the increasing digitalization of port operations, stable connectivity is crucial as the foundation for many machines and daily processes. He said, "Many processes are carried out simultaneously at Klaipėda port, indicating that technology can bring many practical benefits, including increased operational efficiency and further automation of processes."

Showcasing 5G applications at the port
Managers and IT specialists from companies operating at Klaipėda port attended this event. Santa Monica Networks and LMT, along with their technology partners, showcased specific examples of private 5G applications in a real port environment. Atlas demonstrated its solution for autonomous drones that assist in monitoring and automated operations in challenging port environments. Additionally, LVR Flote, which provides technical port services, introduced the unmanned Otter USV, which is used for hydrographic monitoring of the port bed.
As the private 5G network gives the port greater control over connectivity management, it allows the port to decide which processes take priority and which devices can connect to the network. This contributes to increased security and controlled communications during incidents.
Algis Latakas, the director of Klaipėda port authority, emphasized that the development of technology for the port is vital not only for modernization but also for competitiveness, stating, "A private 5G network can provide more capabilities for Klaipėda port and lead to process automation and increased operational capacity."
