The European Investment Bank (EIB) is providing a loan of 100 million euros to assist in the development of Klaipeda Port, Lithuania's largest port, as a strategic gateway for defense, energy, and trade in the Baltic region. This loan will help the Klaipeda Port Authority update and expand the port's infrastructure and strengthen its role in military movements while increasing clean energy facilities.
Strategic Importance of Klaipeda Port
Klaipeda Port, which dates back to the 13th century, holds special significance for NATO operations due to its geographical location. Part of the passenger terminals will be updated to meet NATO's needs, facilitating logistical support for allied naval vessels. This dual approach enhances military mobility while preserving the value of infrastructure for civilian transport and the local economy. The entire project is planned to be completed by the end of 2027.
Project Details and Financing
The EIB financing will cover up to half of the total project cost, estimated at around 201 million euros, with the remaining funding sourced from the European Union, national resources, and other entities. The project includes providing shore power for ships, producing green hydrogen and refueling infrastructure, low-emission port vessels, and upgrading docks for offshore wind energy development.
Karl Nehammer, Vice President of the EIB, stated: "The Klaipeda Port project clearly demonstrates Europe's priorities. This investment directly supports security and European solidarity missions and aligns with the green transition."
Klaipeda Port is part of the European Union's Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), and the updated infrastructure will enhance Klaipeda's position as a key logistics hub for the deployment and maintenance of offshore wind farms, supporting Europe's energy security and green transition.
Algis Latakas, Director General of the Klaipeda Port Authority, added: "Klaipeda Port is an important part of Lithuania's infrastructure that supports the country's economy, energy security, and national security. The financing agreement signed with the EIB is a significant step in the port's development."
