Texas ranked first among the natural gas-producing states in the United States by producing 13,603.5 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas in 2025, accounting for 28.5 percent of the country's total production. The total natural gas production in the United States reached 47.7 trillion cubic feet that year, with several states contributing significantly to this output. The production mainly comes from high-quality shale resources such as the Permian Basin in Texas and the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania.
Top Producing States Status
Following Texas, Pennsylvania ranked second with 7,675.8 billion cubic feet (16.1 percent). Together, these two states account for nearly 45 percent of the total natural gas production in the United States. Additionally, New Mexico and Louisiana ranked third and fourth, respectively, with 4,150.5 and 3,817.3 billion cubic feet. These four states collectively accounted for 61.3 percent of the country's natural gas production.

Natural Gas Production Center in Appalachia
The Appalachian region is recognized as the second-largest natural gas production center in the United States. In 2025, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio collectively produced 13,377 billion cubic feet, equivalent to 28 percent of the country's total natural gas production. This output primarily comes from the Marcellus and Utica shale resources. Alaska also ranks sixth with 3,546.1 billion cubic feet, but its production is more limited due to lack of connection to major pipeline networks.
This production situation in the United States strengthens the country's position in global gas markets. Given the high quality of shale resources and existing production capacities, the United States is recognized as a key player in the global gas market, which could facilitate further infrastructure development and increase natural gas exports.
