Overview Energy, based in Virginia, plans to soon begin operations using solar energy transfer technology from space. The company has announced that it can transfer solar energy from space to the U.S. power grid by January 2028.

Capacity and Energy Demand

Darko Filipi, co-CEO of Overview Energy, mentioned in an interview that the company can provide one gigawatt of solar energy using new technology, equivalent to the output of a nuclear power plant. Given the increasing energy demand due to the unprecedented growth of data centers, this technology could play a significant role in meeting energy needs.

Challenges and Benefits of Space Solar Technology

The development of space solar technology is still in its early stages due to economic and technical challenges. While this technology could solve the issue of solar energy intermittency, some experts like Amory Lovins, a Stanford physicist, have doubts about its cost-effectiveness. He pointed to clean and stable energy options like nuclear and geothermal energy that can produce electricity at a lower cost.

However, Overview Energy believes this technology could help address the land shortage for solar and wind projects. Currently, developing solar and wind farms requires vast tracts of land, which are difficult to find due to existing opposition and restrictions. Transferring solar energy from space could alleviate this problem and help meet a quarter of the energy demand growth in the United States.
