By obtaining Approval in Principle (AiP) for the design of low-pressure CO₂ carriers, NYK Group has taken an important step towards the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects in Japan. This approval serves as the first tangible achievement from the MILES design framework, paving the way for the safe and effective transportation of CO₂ to storage sites.
Design Details and Risk Assessment
Based on an agreement signed on December 1, 2025, six companies are developing a standard design framework for low-pressure CO₂ carriers and alternative fuel vessels. This group includes major Japanese shipping companies such as “K” LINE, MOL, and NYK Line, which have extensive experience in low-pressure gas carrier operations. A risk assessment (Hazard Identification Study “HAZID”) was conducted for the transportation of CO₂ in a 42,000 cubic meter low-pressure carrier. This assessment identified specific hazards associated with low-pressure CO₂ transport and led to the development of a design policy emphasizing safety.

Development of the CCS Value Chain
NYK Group, leveraging its extensive experience and technologies in maritime transport and safe operations, is engaged in the development of the CCS value chain and LCO₂ transportation. The group aims to achieve a carbon-neutral society and, through collaboration and partnerships with industry stakeholders, contributes to the implementation of CCS projects. Establishing a joint design platform for a standard vessel is expected to lead to workload savings and increased efficiency in design and construction.
Obtaining Approval in Principle also represents a significant milestone in the commercialization of LCO₂ carriers, with their standardization aimed at supporting the ongoing CCS projects. This initiative is a fundamental step in accelerating efforts to create an acceptable CCS value chain.
