Iran, with oil reserves of over 157 billion barrels, is considered one of the largest oil producers in the world. However, the inability to convert this wealth into real prosperity for the people has led to serious economic challenges. While the country prides itself on its underground resources, economic realities reveal a significant contradiction.
The Difference Between Assets and Wealth
A misunderstanding of the concept of wealth may lead to incorrect decisions in economic policymaking. In economics, wealth refers to the actual ability of an individual or society to meet needs and improve quality of life. In other words, even if a country has natural resources, these resources can only be converted into wealth if they are managed and utilized properly.

For example, the presence of oil in fields such as the Azadegan oil field, which has a daily production capacity of 320,000 barrels of oil, cannot, by itself, improve the living conditions of the people. This is while in countries like Venezuela, despite having rich oil reserves, 94% of the population lives in poverty.
Resource Management and Trade
Proper management of resources and the establishment of necessary structures to convert these resources into goods and services is essential. Countries like Japan and Switzerland, which are in a weaker position regarding natural resources, have become some of the wealthiest societies in the world by adopting smart economic policies and focusing on trade and free exchange.
Trade and free exchange can help countries benefit from the scientific and experiential achievements of others. For instance, Singapore has become one of the wealthiest countries in the world by becoming a global trade hub, despite lacking natural resources.
Ultimately, the answer to the question about the essence of wealth becomes clear: trade and consumption. The ultimate goal of all economic activities is to meet the countless needs of humans. Without a proper structure for resource management, even the richest countries cannot achieve real prosperity.
