The unprecedented rise in gasoline and diesel prices in many European markets has shifted consumers towards low-emission vehicles. According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Europe, including the UK, Switzerland, and Norway, increased by 52.2% in August compared to last year.
Significant Sales Growth in Germany and France
Sales of BEVs in Germany, the largest car market in Europe, rose by 75% last month compared to August 2022, with gasoline prices in the country reaching a record €2.31 per liter. This price is approximately equivalent to $10 per gallon. In France, another important European market, electric vehicle sales have more than doubled.

Market Changes and Electric Vehicle Share
According to reports, new vehicle registrations in the European Union have increased by 5.3% since the beginning of this year, while energy prices and geopolitical uncertainties continue to rise. Demand for various types of electric vehicles remains particularly influenced by market support measures and the availability of diverse models. This year, battery electric vehicles accounted for 21.7% of the EU market share, up from 15.8% last year. Additionally, registrations of hybrid electric vehicles make up 36.6% of the market and continue to be the consumers' first choice in the EU.
Meanwhile, the market share of gasoline and diesel vehicles has decreased to 29%, compared to 37.5% last year, indicating a major shift in consumer purchasing patterns. These developments clearly reflect the impact of rising fuel prices on buying decisions.
Globally, sales of electric vehicles have also increased this year due to disruptions in oil supply in the Middle East and the second oil price shock in four years. Analysts at Wood Mackenzie predict that the trend of electric vehicle adoption, which began with rising oil and fuel prices, will become a sustainable trend in global markets and that the share of electric vehicles in the passenger fleet may increase more than initially expected.
However, challenges related to accelerating adoption still exist, including the need for billions of dollars in investment to secure critical minerals for batteries and charging networks. Nevertheless, as the Strait of Hormuz crisis further disrupts global fuel markets, demand for electric vehicles may strengthen.
