ABS has granted initial design approval (AIP) for a 22,000 cubic meter (CBM) fueling vessel to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE). This vessel is considered a crucial infrastructure for supplying ammonia as a marine fuel.
Importance of Fueling Infrastructure
Gert Burton, Senior Vice President of Global Engineering at ABS, stated: "Fueling infrastructure is a critical step for any marine fuel and must be designed with safety from the outset. This approval reflects the industry's need for fuel flexibility while advancing the safe supply of ammonia." This approval clearly indicates the need to expand ammonia-related technologies in the maritime industry.
ABS and the HD Hyundai group have collaborated on various projects, including initial approvals for ammonia transportation and fueling systems. Recently, initial approval for the ammonia cargo transportation system of HD KSOE and preliminary review for the machinery arrangement in the engine room of HD HHI have also been completed.
Growing Demand for Ammonia Fueling Vessels
Ryu Hong-Ryeol, CTO of HD HHI, noted that with the rapid emergence of ammonia as a low-carbon alternative fuel, the demand for ammonia fueling vessels will significantly increase. This approval marks an important milestone toward the commercialization of ammonia fueling vessels.
As various countries seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and utilize cleaner fuels, ammonia-related technologies can serve as an effective solution in this regard. This new vessel will play a key role in the supply chain of marine fuels with minimal environmental impact, benefiting the maritime industry.
As the shipping industry moves towards cleaner fuels, collaborations between different companies and the development of new technologies become increasingly important. The AIP approval for HD HHI and HD KSOE represents joint efforts to enhance safety and efficiency in ammonia fueling supply.
