HD Hyundai is looking to establish a new shipyard in the United States, which will be the first shipyard in the country to implement the company's "future shipbuilding" model. This model has been developed in South Korea and is based on digital twin technology. Digital twin technology helps create a virtual version of the physical shipyard to monitor the location of materials, production progress, and work done on each ship in real-time.
Technology and Automation in Shipbuilding
In this new shipyard, automated production systems and robotic welding will also be introduced. These measures seem necessary due to the shortage of skilled labor in the United States. The sections of shipbuilding known as "ship blocks" consist of large pre-fabricated sections of the ship's hull, while modules are pre-fabricated units that include plumbing, machinery, and electrical equipment. By supplying these components, U.S. shipyards can reduce the amount of construction and assembly work required on-site.

Investment Implications for the Shipbuilding Industry
Although the investment amount and ownership structure have not yet been finalized, HD Hyundai is striving to secure a dominant share of this project. This project is seen as an important step in revitalizing the U.S. shipbuilding industry and could expand shipbuilding collaborations between Korea and the United States. According to HD Hyundai officials, the company is seeking new and ongoing opportunities for the development and revitalization of the shipbuilding industry in the United States.
