ABS and the Office of Nuclear Energy of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have signed a memorandum of understanding to advance modern commercial nuclear technology at sea. This agreement includes floating nuclear energy solutions, nuclear vessels, and the development of ports, shipyards, and the necessary industrial infrastructure for the construction and maintenance of these vessels.
Key Priorities of the Agreement
The key priorities of this agreement include concept and feasibility studies for floating nuclear energy and nuclear transportation corridors, as well as support for the development of the U.S. shipbuilding sector for the safe construction and operation of nuclear assets. ABS will also be responsible for coordinating related efforts through the U.S. Marine Innovation Center (USCMI), where ABS serves as the secretary.
The Role of Advanced Nuclear Technology
John McDonald, President and CEO of ABS, stated: "Advanced nuclear technology is transitioning from concept to application, and the maritime industry must be prepared for it. This agreement with the DOE demonstrates the depth of work currently underway and provides a framework for further advancement. Through our collaborations with the DOE and industry leaders, ABS is at the forefront of the future of nuclear energy in the maritime sector, and we are well-positioned to turn this technology into a safe, viable, and practical option for commercial maritime applications."
The U.S. Department of Energy is leading government initiatives in marine nuclear applications. Under this memorandum of understanding, ABS will manage the Marine Nuclear Applications Group (MNAG) and provide technical, regulatory, economic, and policy support for concept and feasibility studies. Additionally, the company will collaborate with the DOE to facilitate inter-agency coordination for the development of a reliable marine nuclear sector in the United States.
Ted Garrish, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy, said: "Advanced nuclear technology has the potential to transform the commercial maritime industry and create new markets for American innovation. The collaboration between the Department of Energy and ABS will help us explore how to leverage decades of experience to safely bring next-generation nuclear technologies to the maritime sector and position America as a leader in this emerging industry."
ABS is working to introduce nuclear energy into maritime applications. The company has published the first comprehensive classification rules for floating nuclear power plants and has issued initial licenses for a range of nuclear projects.
