The dry bulk shipping market, particularly in the capesize segment, is experiencing a significant increase. This week, the average time charter rate rose by $142 to $52,457. This increase reflects higher demand in the Atlantic and pressure on vessel availability in the North Atlantic.
Rate Increases in the Atlantic
In the Atlantic, transatlantic transit rates as well as front-haul rates saw a significant increase on Thursday. This rise is attributed to reports of limited vessel availability and increased cargo requests. However, by the end of the week, the C8 rate dropped to over $1,000, reaching $62,938. Despite this decrease, the rate remains at its highest level since December of last year.

Analysis of the Situation in the Pacific
In the Pacific, activity on the route from Western Australia to Qingdao remained stable, although rates came under pressure. The C5 index fell from $16,685 to $15,625 on Friday. This decline was due to a number of contracts reported by miners and operators. This week, market sentiment in both the Atlantic and Pacific basins strengthened, driven by improved fundamentals and discussions of stronger rates.
Throughout the week, demand from the eastern coasts of South America also improved. Shipowners were able to raise rate expectations, even with the widening of bid and ask ranges. A 83,000-dwt vessel was reported at a rate of $23,000 plus a $1,300,000 bonus for loading, indicating a stronger trend.
Despite the market moving in a mixed manner throughout the week, the Atlantic remained strong in demand while the Pacific remained stable. Conditions in the Atlantic gradually improved, and rates increased towards $40,000 for trips to the Eastern Mediterranean due to strong demand for scrap.
While activity in Asia was limited due to holidays, healthy demand and a tightening list of vessels provided some support. Among notable contracts, a 39,000-dwt vessel was reported for a trip to the western coasts of Central America at a rate of $21,500. Overall, the market was well supported this week with strong demand and a shortage of prompt vessels.
