The meeting of the leaders of the member countries of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) was hosted by Qatar in Doha. This meeting was held on October 22, 2023, with the aim of examining and strengthening international cooperation in the field of natural gas production and export.

Details of the Meeting and Participants

Representatives from major gas-producing countries, including Russia, Iran, Qatar, and Algeria, attended this meeting. The meeting focused on the existing capacities in gas fields and strategies to increase the production and export of natural gas. In particular, Iran's South Pars gas field, which is recognized as the largest gas field in the world with a daily production capacity of 700 million cubic meters, was one of the main topics of discussion.

Growing Demand for Natural Gas

In recent years, the demand for natural gas has increased due to the energy transition towards cleaner and more sustainable sources. According to forecasts, the demand for natural gas is expected to increase by 50% by 2040. Gas-producing countries, especially in the Middle East and North Africa, are looking to increase production capacities and create the necessary infrastructure for greater exports.

This meeting also addressed the existing challenges in energy supply and the impacts of climate change on natural gas production. Experts believe that GECF member countries must work together to address these challenges and meet global energy needs.

Results and Implications of the Meeting

The results of this meeting could have significant impacts on the global natural gas market. With increased cooperation among producing countries, it is expected that gas prices in global markets will achieve greater stability. Additionally, improvements in transportation and export infrastructure could lead to reduced costs and increased access to new markets.

At the end of this meeting, GECF member countries agreed to establish a committee to examine and implement joint projects in order to enhance bilateral and multilateral cooperation. This committee will be tasked with identifying new investment opportunities in gas infrastructure and assisting member countries in achieving common goals.
