Container shipping rates from East Asia and China to the United States have increased this week due to steady demand and traffic caused by weather conditions at Asian ports. According to reports, container shipping rates to the West Coast of the United States range from $7,400 to $8,300 per 40-foot equivalent unit (FEU) and to the East Coast between $9,600 and $11,500 per FEU. These rates are close to the highest levels seen in mid-2022.

Analysis of Container Shipping Rates

Peter Sand, senior analyst at Xeneta, stated that the trend of rising rates from Asia to the United States may soon come to an end. He noted that spot rates are currently averaging $2,691 for FEU (+31%) and $1,280 for FEU (+18%) higher than July 1 levels.

Shipping companies currently preparing for 2027 contract volumes are facing instability. Sand pointed out that while contracted rates are much lower than the current hot spot market, they cannot completely ignore market conditions. They need to assess disruptive factors separately and compare them with their shipping needs.

Changes in Tanker Rates

Chemical tanker rates from the Gulf of the United States have remained generally stable this week. However, a slight increase in lower-tier rates for 2,000-ton shipments from the Gulf of the United States to Brazil and an increase in upper-tier rates from Gulf trade routes to Europe have been observed. Activities on these routes have increased, and contract volumes in the market continue steadily.

However, in the spot market, activities are relatively active, and several buyers are exploring the available space. Chemicals such as caustic soda, methanol, glycols, and base oils remain dominant in this trade route. The number of shipments is relatively limited, which has put slight pressure on rates.

In the route from the Gulf of the United States to Brazil, the market appears balanced. Spot space for small shipments is currently available, and contract volumes have also remained stable. Overall, this market has been calm again this week, and most market participants are awaiting the results of the conflict in the Middle East.
