Zupt Deploys 3D Underwater Inspection Technology for Gulf of America Campaign

Zupt is preparing the 3D Recon V2 underwater imaging system for an inspection campaign in the Gulf of America. This technology is capable of producing high-resolution 3D models that assist in assessing the health of underwater assets. This initiative follows the completion of system integration testing.

Details of the 3D Recon V2 Technology

The 3D Recon V2 system features advanced capabilities and is designed for water depths of up to 4000 meters. This system includes a combination of two high-resolution cameras and a MEMS inertial measurement unit. The integration of imaging and inertial measurement technologies allows for the production of high-geospatial-accuracy 3D models of underwater assets.

During this campaign, the 3D Recon V2 will capture inspection data that can be converted into point clouds. This data provides accurate digital records of underwater structures for health management and inspection, repair, and maintenance (IRM). Additionally, this system can instantaneously produce sparse point clouds for quality control and navigation, while higher-density models can be utilized by engineers to assess the condition of assets.

Applications of Technology in Future Projects

Zupt has stated that this technology, in addition to health management and IRM, can be used for the metrology of anchor chains, hull inspections, pipeline inspections, and pre-installation and installation documentation. Despite these advancements, Zupt has not yet identified the operator, field, or specific underwater assets that will participate in the Gulf of America campaign.

This inspection campaign could significantly impact the improvement of quality and safety in underwater operations in the Gulf of America, enabling oil and gas companies to make better maintenance and asset management decisions using more accurate data.
