Zanskar, a pioneer in geothermal energy development, has recently succeeded in submitting bids for geothermal projects in Nevada, with prices ranging from $105 to $107 per megawatt-hour (MWh). These prices are significantly lower than the average of $114 per megawatt-hour for 11 solar and storage projects in the same filing.
Details of Geothermal Projects
In total, three geothermal bids with a capacity of 180 megawatts have been submitted at a weighted average price of $105.56 per megawatt-hour. In comparison, solar and storage projects with a total capacity of 4,370 megawatts have an average price of $113.89 per megawatt-hour. These figures indicate strong competition between geothermal energy and solar and storage, with geothermal being about 7 percent cheaper than solar and storage options.

Impact of Economic and Technological Factors
One of the factors influencing this price change is the rising costs of solar and storage projects. For example, the price of the Boulder Solar III project has increased from $85 to $125 per megawatt-hour, due to delays in permits, land costs, rising financing costs, and new tariffs. In contrast, geothermal energy is recognized as a reliable source capable of providing stable energy around the clock and under any weather conditions.
Major tech companies like Google and Amazon have also responded positively to this trend. Google is looking to secure 150 megawatts of new geothermal energy through NV Energy, and Amazon will source 100 megawatts from Zanskar's geothermal project.
With government support for geothermal projects, this sector is particularly growing compared to solar and wind projects. While wind and solar projects must be operational by the end of 2027 to benefit from federal tax credits, geothermal projects can maintain this credit until 2033.
It is expected that with increased efficiency in drilling processes and reduced costs, geothermal energy will soon become an economical and sustainable option. Currently, geothermal projects are attracting more attention from investors and major companies due to their ability to provide stable energy and lower costs.
