The governor of Moscow region announced that last night, this area was targeted by extensive Ukrainian drone attacks, resulting in at least two deaths and six injuries. Moscow officials claim that Ukraine's goal is to disrupt the parliamentary elections currently taking place. This attack is considered one of the largest drone strikes on the Moscow region during the war.

Details of the Attack and Damage Incurred

Sergei Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow, noted the "unprecedented" nature of this attack, stating that 450 drones were headed towards the Russian capital, all of which were shot down. In this attack, the main oil refinery in Moscow was damaged, and several houses caught fire as a result of drone strikes.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, confirmed that Kyiv aimed to target "important" Russian oil facilities and a logistics center that were "worth billions of dollars" and supplied the needs of the Russian war machine. According to Ukrainian officials, this refinery provides more than one-third of the fuel required for the entire Moscow region, with a significant portion of the gasoline and diesel produced there allocated to the Russian military.

Political and Human Consequences

The mayor of Moscow also stated that this attack was an attempt to disrupt the parliamentary elections in Russia, which are currently in their third day. Critics do not consider these elections to be free and fair. Russian state media reported that one of the victims of the attack on Sunday was an election official.

Following this attack, temporary restrictions were imposed at Sheremetyevo International Airport, Moscow's largest airport. These restrictions were lifted on Sunday morning, but some flights may still be delayed. This situation highlights the impact of the attacks on transportation infrastructure in Moscow.

The drone attacks last night occurred while recent Russian strikes on areas in Kyiv and Sumy, a city in northeastern Ukraine, resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, including three children. This escalation of tensions between the two countries indicates a worsening of conflicts and attacks on each other's energy and logistics infrastructure.
