TotalEnergies has recently signed a $1.8 billion agreement with Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) that includes investment in Africa's oil and gas infrastructure. This agreement enables TotalEnergies to utilize parts of its midstream infrastructure in Africa while maintaining long-term access to these assets through a volume-based tariff agreement.

Agreement Details and Financial Structure

Under this agreement, GIP will provide $1.8 billion as initial investment. In return for this investment, TotalEnergies will pay GIP a volume-based tariff that will continue for a maximum of 15 years. This agreement allows TotalEnergies to capitalize on its infrastructure assets while preserving their value.

Economic and Strategic Implications

Jean-Pierre Sbraire, CFO of TotalEnergies, stated that this agreement helps strengthen relations with GIP and clearly defines the value of some of TotalEnergies' midstream infrastructure assets in Africa. However, TotalEnergies has not provided specific information about the particular assets covered by this agreement or the details of the volume-based payments.

This agreement represents TotalEnergies' strategic steps towards optimizing its assets in emerging oil and gas markets. Investment in Africa's oil and gas infrastructure is highly significant due to the growing demand and economic potential of the region. Additionally, in light of climate change and global pressures to reduce carbon emissions, TotalEnergies is seeking to balance traditional investments with investments in clean energy.
