Square Robot won the NIOSH Prevention through Design Award in 2026 for its underwater inspection technology called SR-3 and the Side Launcher system. This technology is designed to eliminate the need for entry into confined spaces during the inspection of above-ground storage tanks.
Revolutionary SR-3 Technology
The SR-3 robot allows operators to inspect tanks while still in operation, without the need to shut down, remove product, or clean the tank. The Side Launcher system deploys and retrieves this robot through the side door of floating roof tanks, thereby keeping personnel away from entering confined spaces.
Emi Androud, Vice President of Hardware Engineering at Square Robot, stated: "When we designed the SR-3, our goal was not just to make entry into confined spaces safer. Our goal was to eliminate the need for it." She added: "If a robot can perform the inspection, we can completely remove people from those hazards."
International Certifications and Safety
The SR-3 robot has been independently certified by FM Approvals for operation in hazardous locations Class I, Division 2, while the Side Launcher is certified for Class I, Division 1 environments. These certifications reflect the high reliability and safety of this technology in industrial settings.
The NIOSH Prevention through Design program focuses on identifying technologies and processes designed to eliminate or reduce workplace hazards, emphasizing prevention of hazards rather than relying on protective methods or equipment.
Square Robot received this award on September 15 at the National Safety Council Safety Conference and Expo in Indianapolis. This achievement represents significant advancements in safety and improved efficiency in industrial inspections.
