ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with three South Korean maritime organizations to develop international standards for the next generation of smart ships and shipbuilding facilities. This agreement aims to advance the standardization of ship technologies and shipbuilding facilities in line with South Korea's national strategy to lead in the development of high value-added ships.
Details of the Memorandum of Understanding
Patrick Ryan, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of ABS, stated: "The construction of next-generation ships is rapidly advancing, and the international standards governing smart ships, smart shipbuilding facilities, and advanced manufacturing are still taking shape. This agreement leverages our deep and long-standing experience in the South Korean shipbuilding sector to develop the standards that the industry needs."

This memorandum of understanding expands upon the previous agreement between ABS and the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS), which aims to promote the international standardization of ship technologies and shipbuilding facilities. This agreement also signifies an increase in ABS's collaborations with the South Korean maritime sector, including recent partnerships with Korean and American institutions through the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Cooperation Center.
