The Ministry of Transport of Bangladesh has appointed Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) as the new operator of the Chittagong Container Terminal (CCT) with the aim of optimizing operations. This decision was made after signing an agreement with DP World for the management of the new container terminal (NCT) and reflects the government's ongoing efforts to improve port infrastructure in Bangladesh.

Details of RSGT's Appointment

The Ministry of Transport and the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) are currently processing the appointment letter of RSGT as the operator of CCT. According to a letter issued by the Development-1 branch of the Ministry of Transport on September 28, RSGT has been introduced as the proposed operator for CCT. This letter is signed by Farzana Hussain, the Senior Deputy of the Ministry, and mentions that RSGT is willing to implement CCT projects and the multipurpose terminal of Chittagong Port under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

Features of Chittagong Container Terminal

CCT is one of the key terminals at Chittagong Port, with a wharf length of 450 meters and several anchorage spots for accommodating container ships. This terminal is equipped with four gantry cranes at the dock, mobile harbor cranes, internal vehicles, rubber-tired gantry cranes, and other handling equipment. Based on the terminal's operational system, CCT has a storage capacity equivalent to 8,376 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), allowing for the accommodation of a high volume of containers.

RSGT has also been managing the Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) since June 2024. This terminal became operational after signing an agreement in December 2023 and initially managed only export containers. Due to the lack of a scanner for imported cargo, the initial volume of operations was limited. However, in May 2025, RSGT successfully installed a scanner worth approximately $3 million from its own resources, enabling the acceptance of imported containers and significantly increasing the volume of operations.

Operations and Capacities of RSGT

In 2025, RSGT managed 154,564 TEUs of containers at the Patenga terminal and provided services to 78 ships throughout the year. However, this volume is still less than half of the terminal's annual capacity of about 450,000 TEUs. These statistics highlight the challenges RSGT faces in achieving its maximum operational capacity and underscore the need for infrastructure improvements and facility upgrades.
