This incident is part of a series of similar events in the Strait of Hormuz that have occurred following rising tensions between Iran and the United States and Israel. Since the onset of conflicts in late February, Iran has exerted more control over this waterway, which is recognized as one of the most important oil transport routes in the world. This waterway typically carries about one-fifth of the world's oil consumption.
Global Consequences
Iran has requested ships to obtain its permission before passing through this waterway. Following these developments, the United States has also begun retaliatory maritime actions to prevent Iranian oil exports. These sanctions and military actions could impact the global oil market and put pressure on prices.
On Sunday, the Revolutionary Guards announced that two other oil tankers had also caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz, both of which had collided with mines. These incidents not only affect maritime security but could also lead to an increase in oil prices in global markets.
