The WAVE maritime cluster (Worldwide Alliance for Vessel Decarbonization & Energy Transition) has recently been established in collaboration with companies such as Alpha Marine Consulting, lomarlabs, Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN), and C-Job Naval Architects. This maritime innovation coalition aims to support the integration and validation of emerging ship decarbonization technologies.
Goals and Structure of the Coalition
This coalition focuses on consolidating complementary capabilities, which include the perspectives of ship owners, access to ships, marine engineering, and naval architecture. It also identifies and secures funding opportunities and public and private grants to significantly reduce the operational and commercial costs for ship owners to participate in maritime innovations.
WAVE focuses on innovations with Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) from 3 to 7. These technologies have demonstrated technical potential but require further work for integration, testing, and operational evidence to reach market readiness.
Benefits of Participation for Stakeholders
For technology developers, reaching this stage can be a challenging hurdle. A solution may work in a laboratory or controlled environment, but still needs to address ship-related aspects, safety requirements, classification considerations, operational or logistical constraints, and ship owner expectations. WAVE is designed to bring relevant expertise into the process earlier and provide a clearer pathway for validation in a maritime environment.
WAVE offers ship owners and other stakeholders a low-risk and structured pathway to assess and implement next-generation technologies. In addition to providing technical integration and performance validation, WAVE helps ship owners access regional, European, and international support mechanisms for financing pilot installations.
Each founding organization plays a specific role in this journey:
- Alpha Marine Consulting contributes its expertise in marine engineering and overseeing technical integration.
- lomarlabs plays a role with its experience in supporting technology startups and the perspective of ship owners.
- MARIN evaluates and validates solutions with its marine research and validation capabilities.
- C-Job Naval Architects aids in the effective integration of technologies with its ship design and naval architecture expertise.
WAVE seeks to invite various organizations in the maritime ecosystem to apply for membership. Applicants must provide WAVE with information about themselves and what they can offer to improve the sustainability of maritime transport. Membership applications will be reviewed by the WAVE steering committee to maintain a balanced and non-competitive partnership structure.
