In this project, K Shipbuilding will be responsible for the design and development of the vessel, while Lloyd's Register will handle the technical reviews related to design and structural requirements. The Potential of Ethanol in the Transportation Industry
Theo Kordomplis, Global Business Director for Tankers at Lloyd's Register, stated that ethanol is recognized as a cargo in the product tanker trade, and for this reason, the MR (Medium Range) sector is a suitable area for assessing ethanol as a fuel. Given the development of ethanol production and maritime trade, active owners in this field can relate its role as a cargo and its use on ships.
This project will lay the groundwork for a more thorough assessment for owners in their fleet strategies and will help promote the wider use of ethanol in the tanker sector.
The Future Outlook for Marine Energy
Andy McCrann, Growth Director at Lloyd's Register, stated that the energy transition in the transportation industry is unlikely to be realized through a single fuel solution. Ship owners are increasingly exploring various fuel options and seeking to ensure the safe and efficient implementation of emerging technologies under changing regulations. This project will deepen the industry's understanding of the potential of ethanol in the tanker sector and assist owners in integrating alternative fuel solutions into commercial ship designs.
Tae-Hyun Ko, Technology Director at K Shipbuilding, also mentioned that due to the increasing complexity of regulatory environments, interest in fuel flexibility among ship owners is growing. This collaboration with Lloyd's Register aims to develop an ethanol-focused MR tanker design that meets operational and market needs.
