Japan Engine Company Produces First Hydrogen Engine for Large Commercial Ships

Japan Engine Company proudly announced that it has completed the world's first hydrogen engine for large commercial ships named 6UEC35LSGH. This engine was showcased on September 7, 2026, at the Japan Engine Company's main factory and is recognized as a significant achievement in the shipbuilding and shipping industry.

Significant Reduction in Greenhouse Gases

In factory tests, this engine achieved a hydrogen blend rate of at least 95%, resulting in a reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of over 95% compared to conventional heavy diesel engines. This achievement not only demonstrates the development of new technologies in the energy sector but also represents a significant step towards reducing pollution and achieving decarbonization goals in the shipping industry.

Future Plans and Collaborations

As part of the "Blue Harmony" project, Japan Engine Company plans to install this engine on a multipurpose vessel with a capacity of 17,500 DWT being built by Onomichi Dockyard Co., Ltd. for Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. and MOL Drybulk Ltd. Operational testing on this vessel will begin in April 2028. Additionally, the Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) will be responsible for safety evaluations at all stages of the engine's development and the design, construction, and operation of the ship.

Japan Engine Company is striving to contribute to the growth of the shipping and shipbuilding industry in Japan by developing hydrogen engines and other next-generation fuels, thereby helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime industry and achieve decarbonization goals by 2050. In August 2025, the company also succeeded in producing the first marine engine powered by ammonia, showcasing its leadership in new fuel technologies.
