The increase in natural gas demand in Southeast Asia is particularly driven by the booming artificial intelligence sector. At the same time, rising prices due to the war in Iran may push countries in the region towards renewable energy. These two forces are currently aligned, and leaders in Southeast Asia are striving to strike a balance between economic development and their climate goals.

Sustainable Energy Search

At the Gastech 2026 conference held in Bangkok, officials spoke about the necessity of close cooperation to ensure sustainable LNG supply. According to officials, this need is especially critical for Southeast Asian neighbors whose industrial programs depend on gas production.

Currently, Singapore supplies about 95% of its electricity network based on natural gas. Additionally, demand from Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia is rapidly increasing as industrial leaders seek sustainable and predictable energy sources.

Challenges of Renewable Energy

Meanwhile, solar and battery systems have been proposed as another option for Southeast Asia. Although these systems are still in their early stages, they are growing rapidly. The war in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have had significant impacts on the Asian energy market. Before the onset of U.S. and Israeli military operations in Iran, this strait transported about 20 million barrels of oil and petroleum products daily, 80% of which was allocated to Asian markets.

This market shock could pose a serious threat to the energy security of developing countries. Moreover, the current network capacities are under pressure, and there is a felt need for new investments in energy infrastructure.

Overall, the current strategy for energy development in this region includes an approach that encompasses both natural energy sources and the expansion of solar energy to create a more resilient energy system.
