Hapag-Lloyd and North Sea Container Line (NCL), in collaboration with ZEMBA, are focusing on the use of clean fuels and reducing greenhouse gases in maritime transport. The two companies have committed to a program to reduce 120,000 tons of greenhouse gases over the next three years (starting from 2027) using biofuels and electric fuels.
Details of the ZEMBA Program
The ZEMBA program is designed to respond to the increasing demands of cargo owners for direct support in using hydrogen fuels with near-zero emissions in container transport. In this regard, Hapag-Lloyd successfully utilized liquid biomethane in its first tender to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and won the next tender for electric fuels for the year 2027.
On the other hand, NCL also succeeded in securing a contract for the use of green ammonia on Northern European routes in this tender. This collaboration reflects the strong willingness of the transport industry to move towards clean fuels and reduce environmental impacts.
Environmental and Economic Implications
It is expected that these two companies, by using these fuels, will collectively reduce about 120,000 tons of greenhouse gases over the next three years. This initiative will not only contribute to improving environmental conditions but will also credit cargo owners through the "book and claim" mechanism with additional fees paid by ZEMBA members for reducing greenhouse gases.
Given the growing demand from cargo owners for the use of clean fuels, the collaboration between Hapag-Lloyd and NCL could serve as a model for other transport companies and help facilitate the use of sustainable and low-emission fuels globally.
