Hanwha Ocean is recognized as a key partner in the efforts to revive the shipbuilding industry in the United States. With U.S. shipbuilding capacity estimated to be only one-thirtieth of China's, Hanwha Ocean plays an important role in rejuvenating this industry.

Major Investments in American Shipbuilding

In a report published on October 25, Hanwha has recently acquired the Philadelphia shipyard and expanded into projects related to the U.S. Navy. The United States currently accounts for less than 1% of global shipbuilding production, making the revival of the industry through domestic capabilities challenging.

Military and Commercial Projects

After acquiring the Philadelphia shipyard in December 2024, Hanwha has invested $350 million in improving facilities and plans to invest several billion dollars more. Additionally, the South Korean government has promised a $150 billion investment in the U.S. shipbuilding sector under a bilateral trade agreement signed last year.

The group aims to expand into defense-related shipbuilding and successfully received a subcontract in March for the preliminary design of the U.S. Navy's next-generation logistics support ships. Furthermore, Hanwha has recently been selected as the builder of special auxiliary ships related to the Golden Shield missile defense initiative.

Hanwha aims to upgrade the Philadelphia shipbuilding capabilities from constructing auxiliary ships to warships by 2028. Moreover, the company is pursuing additional acquisitions to expand its operations in the United States and in August made a non-binding offer worth over $1 billion to acquire Austal USA in Mobile, Alabama.

However, challenges also exist. The Philadelphia shipyard faces high production costs, a shortage of subcontractors, and limited site space, which restrict its ability to increase production. Revamping the supply chain after decades of decline in the U.S. shipbuilding industry also requires significant investment and time.

Political uncertainty is another risk factor. The U.S. House and Senate have differing positions on funding for ships built abroad, and delays in passing defense spending legislation have made it difficult to predict the scale of future orders.

Despite positive media coverage in the United States, Hanwha Ocean's shares fell in South Korean trading on October 26. For instance, at 9:17 AM, shares priced at 54,100 won, equivalent to $40.86, decreased by 2.17% compared to the previous session.
