Germany has recently launched a program with a budget of 2 billion euros for research and development of the true price of clean jet fuel (eSAF). This initiative is aimed at advancing sustainable technologies and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. It is expected that synthetic jet fuels will reach an average price of 7,520 euros per ton by 2025, while conventional jet fuel costs around 640 euros.
Challenges in Producing Sustainable Jet Fuels
The development of sustainable jet fuels faces multiple challenges due to high production costs and the need for large-scale financial support. Generally, producers of sustainable fuels require long-term contracts to secure facility costs. However, airlines and distributors are reluctant to commit to long-term contracts under the current market conditions. This situation has led to deadlocks in project financing and reduced producers' ability to lower costs.

H2Global Auction Model and Its Impact on Production
The Federal Ministry of Transport of Germany intends to use the dual auction model H2Global. In this model, a government entity enters into long-term purchase agreements with clean fuel producers and then auctions the fuel to distributors with short-term contracts. This approach provides revenue assurance to producers and allows buyers to avoid high long-term prices. However, despite helping to create competition in the market, the volume of fuel supplied under this budget will only be about 266,000 tons.
Germany has previously used similar auctions in H2Global projects, but the results were not very successful. Nevertheless, this time the main goal is to create sustainable infrastructure and empower producers to enter larger markets. This plan is also seen as an industrial development tool to move projects from paper to operational stages.
Despite the challenges, this initiative could help establish a sustainable market for clean jet fuels in Europe and be recognized as a pioneer in the global sustainable fuels market.
