The OceanEye Alliance was launched on September 25, 2026, by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, to enhance ocean monitoring and provide sustainable support for the global ocean observation system. This initiative aims to fill significant gaps in ocean monitoring, increase financial support, and improve access to ocean data for countries.
Goals of the OceanEye Alliance
The OceanEye Alliance is based on the premise that different countries need better access to data to tackle severe climate change. This initiative helps various countries manage marine resources more effectively and strengthen the resilience of their coastlines. Given the ongoing climate changes, including record-breaking surface temperatures and severe storms, the need for accurate and up-to-date data is more pressing than ever.

Better Decisions with Better Data
Tom Picheral, Global Ocean Program Director at WRI and member of the European Ocean Board, stated: "The consequences of climate change in the oceans are clearly becoming evident, and countries must be better prepared to face these challenges." He also added: "Better data helps governments identify risks earlier and protect communities and livelihoods."
By joining this alliance, over 30 countries have expressed their strong support for the establishment of a more connected global ocean observation system. Many existing ocean monitoring systems are typically reliant on short-term funding, and thus the OceanEye Alliance can help protect monitoring networks and ocean records. This also increases access to data and strengthens collaboration among countries.
With the advancements of this alliance, member countries of the Ocean Panel and other countries committed to sustainably managing 100% of their national waters can adjust their sustainable ocean programs based on more accurate and up-to-date data. This data indicates where risks are increasing and when there is a need to change strategies.
