Equinor and its partners have successfully discovered estimated reserves of 3.3 to 10.3 million barrels of oil equivalent in the Gullfaks South field in Norway. This discovery was announced on October 8 and underscores the significance of targeted exploration in sustaining production from mature North Sea assets.
Discovery Details
This discovery was made through the drilling of an exploratory sidetrack while working on a production well. The discovered reserves include approximately 0.5 to 1.6 million cubic meters of recoverable oil equivalent. The Gullfaks South field is located about 190 kilometers northwest of the city of Bergen.

Exploration Team and Commercial Objectives
The Askeladden rig has drilled the exploratory well officially named 34/10-D-4 BH. This discovery is located in the Gullfaks production license, with Equinor, Petoro, and OMV recognized as partners in this project. Gunnar Egge, Vice President of Equinor at the Gullfaks field, stated that discoveries of this size can be achieved through exploratory wells at effective costs. He described these resources as "profitable barrels" that could help sustain activity and production in the Gullfaks field.
The significance of small discoveries in established production areas is clearly evident. The value of these discoveries depends on development costs and access to production facilities. Additionally, the cost of bringing these discoveries into production is a separate consideration. Equinor has not provided information regarding development costs, start-up dates, or expected production rates in this announcement.
Impact on Production and Infrastructure
In mature fields, small discoveries can help offset declining production and extend the useful life of existing infrastructure. When new resources can be developed through nearby wells and processing facilities, it may be commercially attractive even at volumes that do not justify a standalone project. The cumulative contribution of these discoveries can help maintain production even after the main reservoirs of a field have passed their peak production. Equinor views these new volumes as a profitable addition that can help sustain activity and production in the region.
