The Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) has expressed its support for President Trump's announcement regarding the review of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) methane regulations. According to IPAA, the current regulations disproportionately impose a heavy burden on independent operators of marginal wells. These wells, which make up over 75 percent of producing wells in the United States, play a significant role in supplying domestic oil and gas.
Impact of Regulations on Marginal Wells
Marginal wells are recognized as small and low-capacity wells that are often located in less developed areas. Despite their limited capacity, these wells play an important role in energy supply and can contribute to the economic growth of local communities. IPAA has emphasized that these wells also create jobs and generate tax revenue for local governments, and therefore, reviewing methane regulations could benefit this segment of the energy industry.

Details of Proposed Changes
However, the IPAA statement did not provide specific details about the desired changes to the methane regulations, nor was a specific timeline for these reviews announced. This comes as IPAA has recently merged with the Domestic Energy Producers Alliance (DEPA), thereby gaining more power to represent independent producers. Naegele, one of the representatives of this alliance, stated that this group now speaks with a stronger voice on behalf of independent producers.
The review of methane regulations has been highlighted due to environmental concerns regarding methane emissions, which is one of the greenhouse gases with significant negative effects on climate change. Nevertheless, IPAA believes that there is a need to balance environmental protection with support for independent producers.
