DNV has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) for a new design of an LNG ship with a capacity of 271,000 cubic meters. The certificate was awarded to Mr. Hong Ryul Ryu, CEO and CTO of HD HHI, at a ceremony held at Gastech 2026.
Details of the LNG Ship Design 271K
The LNG 271K Twin Skeg ship is HD HHI's largest design in the LNG vessel sector to date, maximizing cargo capacity while optimizing the overall dimensions of the ship. This design includes five membrane-type cargo tanks developed to provide greater flexibility compared to conventional LNG ships. Despite the higher cargo capacity, this ship will be able to transit the Suez and Panama Canals, providing buyers and operators with greater flexibility in trade and deployment.

Technical Features and Innovative Technologies
The new ship is equipped with a dual propulsion system compliant with IMO NOx Tier III standards and an advanced cargo management system that includes a liquid return facility. The design also incorporates various AI-based technologies to provide smart support during voyages, monitor operations, and optimize energy use. Additionally, this ship utilizes an optimized hull form to enhance propulsion performance and includes several energy-saving devices (ESDs), including Hi-ARS (Air Resistance Saving) from HD Hyundai to reduce wind pressure.
These technologies are designed to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions while improving the overall performance of the ship in line with the stringent environmental regulations of the shipping industry.
