DNV and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore strategic collaboration in the field of software-defined vessel (SDV) technologies and related frameworks for certification and validation. This agreement was signed on the sidelines of the Gastech conference by Kim Hyung-kwan, President and CEO of HD KSOE, and Vidar Dolonen, DNV's Regional Manager for Korea and Japan.
Collaboration Details
Under this MOU, HD KSOE aims to develop software-defined vessel technologies that are designed on a software-centric platform to assist in the digital transformation of ship operations. The SDV concept targets improved operational flexibility, lifecycle management, and the adoption of future digital capabilities. DNV also intends to provide independent validation of this platform using validation methods and technical evidence requirements, assisting HD KSOE in implementing these technologies safely and reliably throughout the full lifecycle of assets.
Areas of Collaboration
Some of the planned areas for collaboration in this MOU include the exchange of knowledge and experience related to DNV's role in independent validation of software-based marine technologies. This collaboration may involve pilot project activities, demonstrations, and engagement with relevant industry stakeholders. Additionally, the parties will explore lifecycle validation approaches that address the implementation and use of SDV technologies in delivered vessels and include management of software updates and changes. The collaboration framework is expected to continue until the end of 2030.

Vidar Dolonen, Regional Manager and Representative of DNV in Korea, added: “Software is increasingly important to the performance and evolution of modern vessels and SDVs. As some vessel functions transition from hardware control to software control, this represents an exciting innovation for improving efficiency and the ability to quickly adapt to changes in vessel performance. However, with the development and expansion of software technologies, the maritime industry requires robust and practical validation approaches that can manage their use throughout the lifecycle of vessels. Through this collaboration with HD KSOE, we aim to explore validation frameworks that can facilitate the adoption of these technologies in a way that enhances the safety and reliability of assets and builds trust in the SDV concept.”
