According to the latest data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the average diesel price for 2026 is projected to be $4.895 per gallon as of the mentioned date. For diesel to break the 2022 record, its average price needs to reach about $5.20 in the remaining 16 weeks of the year. In contrast, gasoline, which reached $4.157 on September 7, needs to rise to $4.35 to break its previous record.

Factors Influencing Diesel Price Increases
Several factors have influenced the increase in diesel prices in 2026. One of these factors is geopolitical tensions and pressure on crude oil prices due to conflicts in the Middle East and energy restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, attacks on oil refining facilities in Russia and disruptions in energy flow have also impacted diesel prices. In August 2023, reports indicated that the price differential for diesel in the market had crossed $100 per barrel for the first time, indicating bottlenecks in the petroleum products market.
In 2022, price records were set due to disruptions caused by the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, with diesel prices reaching $4.989 per gallon and gasoline at $3.951. Given the current conditions, it is expected that diesel prices will reach around $5.22 by the end of 2026, while gasoline will remain at an average of about $3.89.
