China has agreed to purchase at least 20 million tons of coal from the United States in 2027 and 2028. This agreement was made as part of new trade cooperation between the two countries following recent high-level negotiations.
Details of the Coal Agreement
This agreement was reached within the framework of agreements made at the "U.S.-China Trade Council," which has recently begun operations. The United States and China are also seeking preferential tariffs for non-sensitive goods worth $30 billion from both sides, which could reduce trade barriers in various consumer and industrial goods sectors.

Goods Subject to Preferential Tariffs
American goods subject to preferential tariffs include agricultural products, seafood, wood, cosmetics, and medical devices. On the other hand, Chinese products include small appliances, toys, holiday decorations, and child seats.
Additionally, agriculture will be given special attention, and a new working group has been formed to address market access barriers in this sector. This sector has frequently been raised in trade negotiations between the two countries.
Furthermore, Washington and Beijing have established an "Investment Council" to explore investment opportunities and barriers facing companies in the markets of both countries.
Other Key Discussions
Critical minerals are another area being discussed in the negotiations between the two countries. The parties have agreed to continue discussions regarding U.S. concerns about supply chain shortages related to rare earth elements and other critical minerals. These materials are used in technology, automotive, and defense industries.
The U.S. government has also requested Chinese President Xi Jinping to increase China's refined petroleum production so that the United States can help stabilize global supplies amid disruptions related to Middle Eastern conflicts.
Emphasis on Technology and Future Negotiations
Technology will be another aspect of the bilateral negotiations. Washington and Beijing have agreed to continue discussions on emerging technologies, with the next exchange on artificial intelligence scheduled for November.
These agreements were signed following a three-day meeting between Trump and Xi in Washington, where trade, technology, critical minerals, and other economic issues were prominently discussed. The coal purchase agreement is considered an effective trade action from these negotiations, with China planning to import at least 20 million tons of American coal over the next two years.
