The Baltic Dry Freight Index, which monitors rates for dry bulk carriers, reached 3336 points on Thursday, marking a 0.3 percent increase. This rise halted the index's downward trend, which had fallen to its lowest level since early September.
Increase in Capesize Index and Contributing Factors
The Capesize Index, which typically carries 150,000-ton cargoes including iron ore and coal, increased by 0.8 percent to 5656 points. This rise was partly due to an increase in iron ore prices, as Chinese steel producers have ramped up their marine purchases ahead of the national holidays. This could be attributed to expectations of higher demand for steel in the near future.
Downward Trend in Panamax Index
In contrast, the Panamax Index, which typically carries 60,000 to 70,000-ton cargoes of coal or grains, fell by 1.8 percent to 2282 points. This decline reflects the challenges facing maritime transport markets and may indicate changes in global demand for these types of cargoes.
Given the recent fluctuations in the market, analysts are closely monitoring future trends of the indices. Changes in raw material prices and seasonal demands can significantly impact the overall performance of the maritime transport market. In particular, increased demand during specific seasons and the impact of national holidays in major producing countries are clearly evident in these indices.
