The Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT) in the Port of Rijeka, Croatia, has successfully registered 4 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units). This success points to the growth of container traffic in the largest port of Croatia and AGCT's expanding role as a regional gateway in the Adriatic Sea.

Key Role in the Regional Supply Chain

Over the past 15 years, AGCT has become an important link between global transport networks and domestic markets in Central and Southeastern Europe. Many of AGCT's cargoes are transported via rail and road connections to key markets in Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Serbia, and Slovakia. Hans-Ole Madsen, Senior Vice President of ICTSI and Regional Head of EMEA, stated, "Ongoing investments in infrastructure, equipment, and intermodal connections have strengthened Rijeka's position in regional supply chains and improved access to international trade for customers across the terminal's hinterland."

Infrastructure Benefits and Increased Capacity

This achievement coincides with the fifteenth anniversary of AGCT with ICTSI (International Container Terminal Services, Inc). Since 2011, the terminal has increased its capacity to accommodate larger volumes and bigger ships. Iñigo Nuñez Mendibe, CEO of AGCT, emphasized, "Reaching 4 million TEU coinciding with our 15 years of operation with ICTSI demonstrates AGCT's significant progress."

By the end of 2025, AGCT completed a €35 million (equivalent to $40 million) investment program, which included the purchase of two super Post-Panamax cranes and two hybrid rubber-tired gantry cranes. AGCT's port cranes can load the largest container ships in Adriatic ports, while the hybrid gantries increase yard capacity and reduce fuel consumption.

AGCT is also replacing diesel port tractors with electric units and converting existing rubber-tired gantry cranes to hybrid operations. Nuñez Mendibe added, "This development reflects our employees' commitment, our customers' trust, and the partnerships we have built in the Rijeka port community."
