The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) celebrates World Maritime Day on September 24, 2026. This day, recognized as an important date since 1978, provides an opportunity to recognize and appreciate the role of seafarers and the maritime industry in global trade and safety.

Focus on Maritime Regulations and Innovations

Throughout 2026 and 2027, World Maritime Day will focus on international maritime laws and regulations, their implementation, and how training and technical assistance can create safer seas. This year's theme, "From Policy to Action: Strengthening Maritime Excellence," reflects many of the MCA's activities that develop maritime standards and apply them through inspections, certifications, pollution response, and search and rescue.

Collaboration with Government and Industry

In the past year, the MCA has increased its efforts with government, industry, and international partners to ensure that regulations are always aligned with evolving technologies. Through engagement with the industry following the adoption of the MASS code by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), ongoing review of seafarer training syllabi, and hosting the annual meeting of the Paris MoU Committee, the MCA maintains standards and supports innovation in the UK.

World Maritime Day 2026 is also an opportunity to highlight the work of the UK Maritime Innovation Centre, which was launched last year and officially introduced in April. This centre facilitates early engagement between innovators and regulators in areas such as maritime automation (MASS), carbon reduction, and digital technologies.

The Transport Minister, Heidi Alexander, sent a letter to the Secretary-General of the IMO, Arsenio Dominguez, to commemorate this date and emphasize the UK's support for the IMO and its activities.

The Maritime Minister, Kir Mather, stated: "British seafarers keep our nation at the forefront of global shipping – from the goods on our shelves to the people traveling by sea, our nation relies on them every day." He also emphasized the importance of innovation in the maritime industry and providing exciting jobs for young people.

The Executive Director of the MCA, Virginia McVea, remarked: "World Maritime Day is an important opportunity to recognize the impact of international standards. Our colleagues work every day to turn policy into action, leading to a safer working environment for seafarers and economic growth in the maritime industry."
