Trump's Mid-Corridor Plan (TRIPP), defined as the shortest section of this corridor at approximately 40 kilometers long, has not yet been operational and faces various obstacles. This project, designed to facilitate economic and trade communications between Central Asia and Europe, is encountering major challenges from Iran and Russia.

Background and Objectives of the Project

In August 2025, the Trump administration initiated actions to normalize relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This project particularly aimed to create a direct route for Azerbaijan to the Nakhchivan region without passing through Iran. This corridor could provide an opportunity to strengthen relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and also help develop the mid-corridor. In other words, TRIPP could lead to a reduction in Central Asian countries' dependence on China and transfer their energy resources to Europe.

Key Obstacles

Despite financial investments and ongoing efforts from Washington to advance this project, construction has yet to begin, and limited information is available regarding its implementation stages. The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, recently announced that construction in Armenia may begin in early 2027. One of the main obstacles is Iran's security concerns. Recent conflicts between Iran and the United States and Israel have fundamentally changed the regional security environment. The TRIPP corridor, as a strategically supported transportation route by the United States, is located adjacent to Iran's northern border, raising significant concerns in Tehran.

Additionally, Russia's control over Armenia's railway infrastructure is another key obstacle to the implementation of the TRIPP project. The Armenian railway network is under the control of the Russian State Railway Consortium, and this agreement will remain in place for a long time. Russia has shown no willingness to relinquish control, but the issue may be subject to negotiation in the future.

Consequences and Future Outlook

The existing obstacles to the implementation of the TRIPP project, particularly pressures from Iran and Russia's control over railway infrastructure, could have significant effects on economic and political relations in the region. This situation not only harms the economic development of Armenia and Azerbaijan but could also impact the entire mid-corridor and Central Asia's export routes.

Ultimately, given the existing challenges and its strategic implications, the implementation of the TRIPP project will require international cooperation and extensive negotiations among the involved parties to effectively overcome the existing issues.
