The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced the lifting of regulations limiting greenhouse gas emissions from coal and gas power plants. Lee Zeldin, the head of the agency, stated that these changes are aimed at saving costs and reducing energy prices. According to Zeldin, this action could create up to $310 billion in economic savings.
Details of the Regulation Lifting
The Environmental Protection Agency stated in a press release that the regulations from the presidency of Joe Biden, which addressed strict limits on greenhouse gas emissions, exceeded the agency's authority and unfairly pressured power plants. Thus, Zeldin emphasized that the new regulations are designed to ensure affordable and reliable energy supply.

This comes as environmental groups have warned about the consequences of this decision, deeming it a threat to public health and the environment. According to these groups, the lifting of these regulations could lead to an increase in respiratory diseases and deaths caused by air pollution.
Economic and Environmental Consequences
The Environmental Protection Agency also announced that it is planning to lift other greenhouse gas regulations in the energy sector. These changes, which are set to undergo public review, were proposed by Zeldin last year. He believes that these measures can help reduce transportation, heating, and energy production costs.
Statistics show that the U.S. energy sector accounts for nearly a quarter of the country's total greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to 1.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year. Meanwhile, the United States is the second-largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world after China.
Potential legal challenges are anticipated following this decision. In 2022, the agency lost its powers to limit greenhouse gas emissions when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of 19 states and some of the largest coal companies. This situation has raised concerns about the future of environmental regulations and their impact on climate change.
