The maritime transport industry added another £495,000 to the total of £4 million in support of Great Ormond Street Hospital by holding the OSCAR Dragon Boat Race this year. This annual event is recognized as one of the most important and popular events in the London maritime calendar.
Race Details and Participants
The OSCAR Dragon Boat Race featured 22 teams, including seven boat owners. Each team raised at least £6,500 and competed in this 11-person event. In this race, the Miller Insurance team took first place, finishing less than a second ahead of the second-place team, Tysers. The Pacific Basin and Oldendorff teams placed third and fourth, respectively.
Social and Financial Impacts
The Union Maritime team won the award for the largest fundraiser by raising over £300,000. According to Phil Parry, the head of the OSCAR campaign and CEO of the event organizers, this team has raised over £1 million in recent years. He emphasized that the advancements of this campaign have contributed to life-saving treatments at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Since the establishment of the OSCAR campaign following the treatment of Phil Parry's child, who had leukemia, the industry has supported this campaign every year. These efforts have helped the hospital continue its life-saving work for sick children and their families. The hospital is currently making progress on a new children's cancer center, for which £235 million has been raised.
The construction operations of this center are progressing rapidly, with approximately 26,000 cubic meters of soil removed from the site. Phil Parry stated, "The lack of funding for childhood cancers and rare diseases is undeniable. With the donations raised from the transport industry, children have survived who otherwise would not have had a chance of survival."
