The Flemish government voted in favor of the plan to construct a new dock on the left bank of the Scheldt River at the Antwerp-Bruges port at the end of June. This new dock will help create additional space for containers, which play a vital role in the functioning of this port.
The Importance of Containers in Global Trade
Containers are now an integral part of ports, and their main advantage is their standard size. This standardization speeds up loading and unloading and facilitates the easy transfer of containers from ships to trucks, trains, and inland vessels.
The Antwerp-Bruges port, as the second largest port in Europe and an important economic engine, accounts for 162,000 direct and indirect jobs and constitutes 4.5 percent of Belgium's GDP. In 1975, only 5 percent of the goods imported to Antwerp were transported in containers, but today this figure has risen to 56 percent.
Challenges Facing the Port
Containers carry almost all the goods we use in our daily lives, from the smartphone in your pocket to clothing, shoes, bicycles, and food. Local companies also need containers to ship their products to other parts of the world.
Currently, container terminals at the Antwerp port are filled, but global trade continues to grow. If the port cannot develop in line with this growth, activities will simply shift to other ports, which would mean reduced economic prosperity for the region.

The new dock project is part of the "Extra Container Capacity Antwerp" (ECA) plan, which not only increases capacity but also focuses on the optimal use of existing space. This project has also considered the needs of local residents and includes investments in shore power for ships and loading and unloading activities without emissions, as well as green areas.
