Swan Defense and Heavy Industries (SDHI) in Pipavav, Gujarat, is recognized as one of the leading companies in India's shipbuilding industry, known for its capabilities in constructing Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs). With the largest dry dock in India and one of the largest globally, the company is establishing the necessary infrastructure to build large and complex commercial vessels.

Advanced Infrastructure of SDHI

The SDHI dry dock, measuring 662 meters by 65 meters, has the ability to build and repair vessels with a deadweight tonnage of 400,000 tons (DWT). This dry dock is the seventh largest in the world and the fourth in Asia. Additionally, SDHI has the largest covered construction facility in India, spanning 2.41 million square feet, with an annual production capacity of 164,000 tons of steel.

The company is also equipped with the only 600-ton Goliath crane in India and facilities for prefabrication and assembly. This infrastructure helps SDHI execute large and complex projects with high quality and be recognized as one of the primary shipbuilding centers in India.

International Expansion and New Projects

SDHI is expanding its footprint in the global market by receiving orders from international companies. Recently, the company has secured orders for six chemical tankers of 18,000 DWT for the Norwegian company Rederiet Stenersen AS and four dual-fuel cargo ships of 92,500 DWT for Energy ONE Limited. These orders reflect SDHI's capability in constructing complex and valuable commercial vessels.

Alongside SDHI, other shipyards in India are also striving to improve their infrastructure. Kochi Shipyard, with its new dry dock measuring 310 meters by 75 meters, has enhanced its ability to build larger vessels, including LNG carriers. However, this infrastructure is not yet optimized for VLCC construction.

Larsen & Toubro Shipyard in Kattupalli and Hindustan Shipyard in Visakhapatnam are also active in shipbuilding, but compared to SDHI, they focus more on smaller commercial and military vessels. This highlights the challenges faced by the Indian shipbuilding industry in becoming a global hub.

Finally, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai, with a distinguished history in building destroyers and submarines, is currently recognized as one of the main pillars of India's shipbuilding industry. Although this company does not specialize in building large commercial vessels, its capabilities reflect the diversity and various specialties within the shipbuilding industry.
