Valencia Port has achieved new successes by adding a new test to its records as a testing environment for innovation in the port and logistics sector. This time, the focus is on a passive radiative cooling film developed by the startup Cooling Photonics, which was tested last summer in the Transbase Soler warehouse with very positive results.

Testing in Real Summer Conditions

This test was made possible through the collaboration of the port community, the Valencia Foundation, and the support of Opentop, the open innovation center of Valencia Port. In this test, four 20-foot containers were monitored for over fifteen days under the same amount of sunlight: one without any covering as a reference, one with a conventional internal thermal blanket, the third with the cooling film only on the roof, and the fourth with this film on the roof and side walls. Independent sensors recorded the temperature every 15 minutes, resulting in over 5,600 measurements.

Results and Benefits of the Technology

The results obtained were quite convincing. The standard container reached a temperature of 53 degrees Celsius and spent more than a third of its time above 40 degrees, while the fully covered container never exceeded 34.2 degrees Celsius. The daily peak was reduced by an average of 17.5 degrees, and on the hottest day, this difference reached 22 degrees.

This cooling film reflects sunlight before it passes through the steel shell instead of insulating and trapping heat, allowing the container to cool naturally at night.

Juan Manuel Díaz, the innovation manager at Valencia Port, stated that the Valencia laboratory was created to demonstrate the value of innovative ideas in a real port environment. This test is an excellent example: the technology tested at our port provides practical and measurable results and can help the entire sector improve efficiency and sustainability.

Salvador Furió, Deputy General Manager and Director of Innovation and Development at the Valencia Foundation, also added that this test is another example of the foundation's commitment to startups and innovative companies. Through Opentop, we facilitate their access to the port community so they can validate their solutions in a real environment.
