SpaceX is applying for a permit to build a 32.4-mile natural gas pipeline in Florida that will directly connect to the international gas network. This project is designed to meet the increasing needs of the company's launch operations at Cape Canaveral.
Pipeline Project Details
The proposed pipeline, with a diameter of 16 inches, will pass through Brevard County and connect SpaceX's operations to Florida's gas transmission system. This move will allow the company to secure its own dedicated natural gas supply and reduce reliance on liquefied natural gas (LNG) transported by truck to launch sites.

According to regulatory documents, SpaceX's subsidiary, Coastal Connect Services, has submitted a request to establish a tariff to the Florida Public Service Commission. This pipeline will be established at full capacity to meet SpaceX's needs.
Necessity of the Project in Light of Increased Launch Activities
Currently, SpaceX is heavily reliant on truck-delivered LNG for its launch operations in Florida. The company has informed regulatory officials that it may need hundreds of LNG trucks for a single launch. However, the existing infrastructure in the area cannot supply the required volumes. The Florida project is part of SpaceX's broader effort to gain more direct control over the natural gas supply needed for its launch sites.
In June, the company also proposed building an 8-mile natural gas pipeline at its Starbase facility near Boca Chica, Texas. Additionally, SpaceX is entering the gas supply market and has begun hiring natural gas traders to manage fuel purchases for its launch sites in Florida and Texas.
Economic Impacts and Energy Supply
The natural gas pipeline project in Florida will directly connect to the Florida Gas Transmission pipeline system, which is an international system for supplying gas in the state. Staff at the Public Service Commission have recommended that Coastal Connect's proposed tariff be approved before the commission meeting on October 6.
This pipeline will reduce the number of LNG trucks needed to supply SpaceX's operations in Florida and significantly provide more capacity for the company to increase its launch pace. However, the commission has yet to finalize its order regarding the tariff in the unreviewed regulatory documents.
