Hooshang Seyedali, the manager of gas supply coordination at the National Iranian Gas Company, pointed out the necessity of smartening the gas network to identify and combat illegal withdrawals while reviewing the existing challenges in gas supply. Although gas networks were primarily metallic in the past, the development of polyethylene pipes has made it easier to create illegal branches due to the technical characteristics of these pipes.

Regulatory Challenges and the Need for Smartening

Seyedali stated that the creation of illegal branches through excavation and access to underground facilities, without identifying violations, is not due to weaknesses in the monitoring system, but rather a more complex issue. Given that gas networks are located underground and many violations occur at night, continuous monitoring of these networks is challenging. For this purpose, the National Iranian Gas Company has moved towards smartening the network.

With the development of smart systems and the use of smart meters, it has become possible to examine the consumption patterns of subscribers, and if there is a discrepancy between the volume of incoming gas and recorded consumption, its source must be investigated. These changes will significantly aid in the quicker identification of illegal withdrawals and leaks in the network.

Preventive Measures and Efficient Consumption Culture

The manager of gas supply coordination also referred to the statistics of violations and announced that Alborz province had the highest rate of gas theft last year. He emphasized the importance of adhering to regulations and preventing illegal withdrawals, stating that gas theft not only incurs economic losses but also affects the supply needs of other consumers.

Seyedali also mentioned the challenges of managing gas supply during the cold months of the year, saying, "Management of available resources during these months must be done correctly. Illegal use of gas for purposes outside of its intended use, such as heating outdoor pools or cryptocurrency mining, is challenging."

Finally, to encourage individuals to identify and report illegal branches, a mechanism for rewarding reporters is being considered. This action could increase individuals' motivation to identify and report violations.
